Ann Mary (Maro) Slanina, 97
Joplin, Missouri: Funeral services will be held 9:30am Friday at the Wasko Funeral Home and 10am in St. John Catholic Church in Campbell for Ann Mary Slanina, 97, who passed away on April 2, 2010 in Joplin, Missouri.
Ann was born June 21, 1912, to John and Anna (Judin) Maro. She grew up in Campbell, Ohio, and graduated from Kent State University in 1934. She was an elementary school teacher until she married Dr. Stefan J. Slanina on August 17, 1937. Together they raised their family in Angola, Indiana. Ann owned and operated Ann’s Dress Shoppe in Angola until she retired to Joplin, Missouri in 1972.
Ann was an avid gardener, interior designer and talented seamstress. She belonged to the Rosary Society, the Garden Club, and the literary club Sorosis in Angola, Indiana and was active in the community. She was a devout Catholic and member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Angola, and St. Mary Catholic Church in Joplin.
She is survived by her daughters Dr. Ann Marlowe of Joplin, Missouri, Mary (Dr. Robert) Alguire of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Stephany Rysenga of Kalamazoo, Michigan; grand daughter Gywnne (Patrick) Darden of Athens, Georgia; sister, Margaret Horvath, sister-in-laws Helen and Jane; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents; husband Stefan; a sister Sophie; brothers Fr. John, Michael, Stephen, and Joseph; bother-in-law John Horvath; sister-in-law Ann; and grandson Matthew Hirsch.
In lieu of flowers, please have masses said at St. John’s Catholic Church in Campbell, in Ann’s memory.
The Slanina family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends Thursday from 5-7pm. A burial Mass will be held 10:00am Friday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Campbell, and Ann will be buried in St. John’s Cemetery next to her husband.
