Robert J Bakes

April 15, 1936 ~ July 24, 2017 (age 81) 81 Years Old

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at the Kubina Yuhasz Wasko Funeral Home, celebrated by lifelong family friend Fr. Carl Kish, for Robert J. Bakes, 81, who passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 24, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was born April 15, 1936 in Youngstown, a son of the late George and Susan (Misalko) Bakes. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and was inducted into their Hall of Fame for baseball. He proudly served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Berlin, Germany.
He worked as a yard clerk for Republic Steel until the mill closed, and then worked in maintenance for Boardman Park until his retirement. He was a member of the Slovak Catholic Sokols.
Bob played both football and baseball in high school and later played professional baseball in the farm system minor leagues, where many players were recruited to the New York Giants. He also enjoyed playing golf, bowling, and cheering on his favorite teams, the Cleveland Browns and Indians. He liked to go to Mountaineer and Thistledown, where he enjoyed betting on the horses and playing slots. But most of all, he loved living life. Bob always had kind words and a smile to offer everyone. He was known for his amazing stories that he shared with his family throughout the years and will be deeply missed by all those that knew and loved him.
Bob leaves behind to cherish his memories, his siblings, George of Austintown, Patty (John) Campolito of Youngstown, and Ray, with whom he shared his home, his nieces and nephews, Monica Bakes, Rhonda (Sam) Gianfrancesco, Julie (John) Slike and John (Angie) Campolito, Jr., his great nieces and nephews, Haley, Sammy, Alexis, Antonio, Johnny, Nicholas, and Rachel, and his late companion’s daughter Charlotte (Clint) Bunt and her son, Johnathan Risden, who he thought of as his daughter and grandson.
Other than his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his loving companion of twenty-five years, Penne Thomas and his sister-in-law, Patti Bakes.
The Bakes family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Kubina-Yuhasz-Wasko Funeral Home, where they will receive family and friends from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the funeral home.
