Stephen Mistovich, 70

Berlin Center…Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Austintown, with Rev. Gregory Fedor officiating, for Stephen Mistovich,70, who passed away Tuesday, August 15th, with his loving family by his side.

Stephen was born in Youngstown on March 6, 1947, to Stephen and Anne Cutrone Mistovich.

Stephen served as an altar boy for St. Lucy’s Church. Upon graduating from Campbell Memorial in 1965, he attended both Kent State and Youngstown State Universities graduating with a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration.

He began his teaching career in the Youngstown City School System at Hillman Junior High.  He was an assistant football coach of the 1971 Hillman Junior High football team.  His next assignment was at his Alma Mater, Campbell Memorial, followed by a long tenure at Girard City Schools.  He taught History, Social Studies, and Occupational Work Experience.  He coached football, and from 1979-1991 was the head wrestling coach at Girard High School.  In 1985, he was nominated as Coach of the Year by the Mahoning Valley Coaches Association. 

Stephen enjoyed a variety of sports, collegiate football, especially OSU, the outdoors, gardening, boating, and fishing.  He was also an avid jogger. 

As his father was a highly decorated soldier, Stephen became a World War II history buff, collecting memorabilia and books on the subject.

Stephen will be deeply missed by his wife, the former Celeste Scapp, whom he married January 21, 1970; His son, Brian (Kerri) Mistovich,; his daughter, Dawn (Steve) Goclano; his beloved grandchildren Aric Mistovich, Jack Goclano, and Cash Goclano; sisters, Marilyn Borman, Donna DiNobile, and Karen (Jerry) Colbert; his brothers, Robert (Mary Ann) Mistovich and Rick (Jolynn) Mistovich. Mother-in-law Dorothy Zito, and sister-in-law Victoria Carter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter Grace, and brothers-in-law Ken Borman and Vince DiNobile.

The Mistovich family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive family and friends Friday from 10:00 – 11:00 am at the Church.
