Georgieann Martinko Obituary

POLAND - Georgieann Martinko, 88, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2024, at Shepherd of the Valley, Skilled Nursing, where she made her home for over six years.

Born in Youngstown, on May 6, 1935, she was one of four children to John and Anna (Paroff) Maruschak.

A graduate of Chaney High School, she was then employed by the Youngstown Board of Education, and also served as a Secretary for the Youngstown City Schools for a total of 32 years.  She also volunteered with the St. St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Matthias Church for many years.

Georgieann married her love, Thomas R. Martinko, on September 6, 1958, upon his return from Army military service in Korea.  They celebrated 58 years together.  He preceded her in death on March 7, 2016.

Georgieann enjoyed cooking, baking, casinos, playing bingo and cards, the Hallmark and Weather Channels as well as entertaining many family and friends.  She loved traveling and spoke often of trips out west to Montana, California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Florida, up and down the East Coast and to England.

She is survived by and will be dearly missed by children – Susan (Joseph) Yager, Donald (Deidre) Martinko, Sharon Bartlone (friend, Stan Chapp); grandchildren – Jessica (David) Wyrick, Jacqueline Martinko, Justyn Martinko and great-grandson Luke Wyrick, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. She always reminded us to “keep smiling and take care of each other.”

Special thanks to Drs. Robert Spratt, Joseph Francisco, Pratheek Kakkasseril and Aneta Homer.  The family thanks the entire staff at Shepherd of the Valley – Poland, and Hospice of the Valley for their loving care.
