Monsignor Peter Polando officiating, for Lawrence G. "Larry" Valerio, 83, who passed away late Friday, September 28, 2018.
Larry was born June 24, 1935, in Campbell, the son of Vincent and Theresa Vecchio Valerio.
He graduated from Campbell Memorial High School in 1953 and then enlisted in the Air Force, where he served for four years. After his discharge, he worked for Youngstown Sheet and Tube Seamless Department, until the plant closed 27 years later. He then joined the Campbell school system as a custodian, until his retirement in 1997.
He was a lifelong member of Christ the Good Shepherd Parish at St. Lucy's Church and also attended Poland United Methodist Church with his wife, where she was a member.
Larry loved to travel to casinos and on yearly cruises. He was an avid fisherman, but his most beloved hobby was his huge vegetable garden that he shared with his family and friends. They all looked forward to his beautiful hand braided garlic in July.
He was a member of JCC water aerobics classes. Larry looked forward to bowling each week with his buddies, and in the winter he put together jigsaw puzzles and the bigger the better was his motto. He also loved Wii golf with his best buddies, Tony, Louie and Ken.
Larry is survived by his wife and best friend of 13 years, the former Carolyn (Campbell) Matsi; his children, Larry Jr. (Beth) Valerio of Boardman, Jim (Janine) Valerio of Canfield and Tracy Canter of Austintown; step-children, Jim Matsi of Cleveland, Sue (Will) Huffman of Girard, Shari (Mike Tudor) Matsi of Poland, and Lisa (Chip) Miller of Struthers; his 11 grandchildren, Vincent (Meghan) Valerio, Dominic Valerio (Tess), Liz (Chris) Kadvan, Robert Canter (Nicole), Matthew Canter, Emily (Mike) King, Miranda (Tim Sowlwik), Tyler Boarts, Haley Cremeans, Charlie Miller and Nicholas Miller; six great-grandchildren, Vinny, Lorenzo, Claire, Zoe, Kari and Nathan; brother, Joe Valerio of Campbell; sister, Carmie (John) Mroski of Girard; and brothers-in-law, Joe (Teresa) Krisinski of Poland and Tony Vavlas of Campbell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, the former Sandy Krisinski, whom he married in 1959, and who passed away in 2000; and sisters-in-law, Fran Valerio and Bonnie Vavlas.
The Valerio family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive family and friends Tuesday evening from 4-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
