Carol Gonda Obituary

Carol Gonda, 83

Youngstown…Carol Gonda, 83, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2024, at her home, from complications of ALS, (Lou Gehrig disease).

Carol was born January 10, 1941, in Youngstown, the daughter of Stephen Garcar and Elizabeth Yohman.  She was a 1958 graduate of Chaney High School and a lifelong area resident.

Carol was an amazing wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend to us all.  She worked as a bank teller for many years at Dollar Bank, which later became PNC Bank.

She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows at St. Mathias Catholic Church in Youngstown where she was very active in the church. She was a member of the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild and the Our Lady of Sorrows Senior Club and always enjoyed working at the Slovak Fest.

She was an active member of the Catholic Sokols, the Jednota, and PERI (Public Employees Retirement of Ohio), holding various positions within all of them.  Carol enjoyed bowling for many years at Holiday Bowl and Boardman Lanes as well as playing bocce and going to the casino, making lifelong friends.

Though she enjoyed getting out, she loved nothing more than being with her grandkids.  She spent countless hours with them swimming at her pool, playing wall-ball in her backyard, and playing endless card games.  She loved going to ALL of their activities, most recently attending every YSU home baseball game.  She loved going on trips with her brother and sisters, especially casino bus trips and wonderful cruises.

Her husband, Joe Gonda; whom she married September 24, 1966; passed away January 28, 2000.

Carol will be deeply missed and always remembered by her children, Mary (Steve) Liversage of Poland, Kathy (Mike) O’Shaughnessy, also of Poland, and Joe “My Joey” (Mollie) Gonda of Canfield; her grandchildren, Nick (Anna Bue) and Steffy Liversage, Padraig and Braeden O’Shaughnessy, Maria (Dan) Becker, Amanda, Alissa, Michael, and Theresa Gonda; her great-grandson, Orion Liversage; sisters, Judy Birmingham, Patty Gordulic, and Mary Gonda; her brother, Steve Garcar; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and her husband, Joe; she was preceded in death by her brothers, Bob Garcar and Jim Garcar; and her sister, Bernice Smith.

The Gonda family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Kubina Yuhasz Wasko Funeral Home and will receive family and friends Friday, January 26, 2024, from 4-6:00 pm at the funeral home (5925 Market St., Boardman); where the Our Lady of Sorrows Guild will be offerings prayers at 3:45 pm.  Visitation will also be held again on Saturday morning, Jan. 27, 2024, from 10-10:45 am at Our Lady of Sorrows at St. Mathias Catholic Church.  A Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Rev.
