Carol Pope Obituary

Carol J. Pope, 76

BOARDMAN…Carol J. Pope, 76 passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.

Carol was born November 13, 1948, in New Haven, Connecticut, daughter of Raymond O’Connell and Anna H. Reimer O’Connell – She could give you every Landmark in New Haven and Hamden alike.

She was a 1966 graduate of Hamden High School and later went on to earn an associate’s degree in medical Transcribing and worked for the Center for Orthopedics in Hamden, CT as a transcriptionist before retiring in 2012.

Carol moved to Ohio in 2015 but spent her past years in Vermont and Connecticut where she raised her daughters and took immense pride in her home and family as a stay-at-home mom until tackling both to enter the workforce.

Carol loved her grandchildren dearly and cherished any time she got to spend with them.  She looked forward to her morning calls with her daughters and delighted at her special care packages sent with love to her in Ohio. Carol loved visiting NYC, specifically the theatre-ready and willing to see anything in circulation whether alone or with company.  Carol had an immeasurable passion for reading. You could always find her in the wee hours of the morning, blanket in her lap, book in hand - consuming up to 7-8 books a week. She never missed an opportunity to catch the Wizard of Oz on TV, calling everyone to remind them to tune in on Thanksgiving. She and Joe always spent New Years Eve in NY to see the ball drop to ring in the New Year.  She firmly believed that everyone should go to the city to see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade at least once as well.  Carol was “mom” to many and loved her Sunday dinners with “all of her children”.  Never one to mince words or beat around the bush, she told it like it was – take it or leave it but she always did it with absolute love in her heart.  Carol was strong, and tough but also tender and kind.  She was a true gem.  A wise woman who gave sage advice even if we didn’t want to hear it at the time, she’d always be right. Carol had a wicked sense of humor not to be rivaled, a hearty laugh and a mischievous twinkle in her eye, knowing she had you laughing and laugh you did.

Carol will be deeply missed and always remembered by the loves of her life, Joseph Ziak of Ohio; her daughters, Jennifer Wargo and Lindsey (Josh McPhail) Pope both of Connecticut; her 2 grandchildren, Amelia, and RJ Wargo; and several nieces and nephews; along with all the those lives she touched with her unique personality, and outlook on life always cheering for the underdog.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Richard, Frank, and Raymond O’Connell; and her sisters, Trudy Connor, and Joan Radue.

A Celebration of Carol’s life will be held at a future date.

The family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell.
