Fay Mastorides Arfaras, 98
Campbell…Fay Mastorides Arfaras, 98, fell asleep in the Lord on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at Elmwood Assisted Living Facility in Hubbard, Ohio.
Family, faith, and community were the pillars of Fay’s life. Born on January 17, 1927, in Campbell, Ohio, she was the daughter of Emmanuel and Stamatia (Kypraios) Mastorides, who immigrated from Symi, Greece. Fay attended school in Campbell and graduated from Campbell Memorial High School in 1946.
Following graduation, she pursued cosmetology, becoming a pioneer for women entrepreneurs in the area. She proudly opened the first beauty salon in Campbell, “Fay’s Beauty Salon” on Wilson Avenue, where she mentored many women in the profession of cosmetology.
A proud Campbellite, Fay cherished the lifelong friendships she built in her hometown. She remained closely connected to her fellow classmates and played an instrumental role in preserving the city’s history. Along with her husband and children, she was a founding trustee of the Campbell Memorial High School Alumni Association, actively advocating for her beloved city throughout her life.
Fay’s faith was the cornerstone of her existence. Her journey began at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Youngstown, where she was involved in the youth group and choir. When the Campbell community came together to establish a new church, she eagerly contributed her time and effort. Fay fondly recalled the variety shows, mini festivals, and dances that helped strengthen the Greek community. As one of the first youth advisors at Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church, she remained deeply involved in the church through the Ladies Philoptochos Society and other organizations. In later years, she took great pride in assisting the Archangel Michael Historical Group, helping identify old photographs and contributing to the creation of commemorative icons for the church.
Fay and her beloved husband, Bill, were known for their hospitality. No matter the time of day, she ensured that visitors never left hungry. Whether after a football or basketball game, she would effortlessly prepare meals in a matter of moments. Her home was always filled with warmth, laughter, and the delicious aromas of her cooking.
An avid Cleveland sports fan, Fay took pride in having attended the 1948 World Series, witnessing the Cleveland Indians’ victory. She also enjoyed needlework, crocheting blankets, solving puzzles, playing bingo, and trying her luck at slot machines. Most of all, she cherished family vacations, especially trips to Las Vegas, San Antonio, and Hawaii.
Family gatherings were the highlight of her life, particularly during Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Easter. In the last year and a half, Fay resided at Elmwood Assisted Living, where she continued to socialize and embrace new experiences. One of her proudest moments was becoming a viral sensation on TikTok, starring in Elmwood’s festive video “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” which amassed over 3.5 million views. Her joyful spirit and enthusiasm made her a beloved star among residents and staff.
Fay was a devoted member of both Archangel Michael and St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Churches.
She is survived by her loving children, Stamatia (John) Hruby, Tula (Dan) O’Neal, and John (Lori) Arfaras; and her cherished grandchildren, John Michael (Charu) Hruby, Stephen (Katie) Hruby, Daniel (Jessica) O’Neal, William (Renae) Arfaras, Austin Arfaras, and Carson Arfaras. Fay found immense joy in her great-grandchildren, Bodhi Hruby, Lucy Eleni Hruby, and Eleanor Fay O’Neal. Sister-in-law, Evangelia Mastorides. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
Fay was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William “Bill” Arfaras, whom she married on May 29, 1959, and who passed away on September 20, 1995; her sister, Helen (Demetrios) Lagoutaris; and her brother, Nicholas Mastorides.
The Arfaras family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell. A private funeral service was held in her honor on Monday, February 10, 2025, at Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Akeso Home Health and Hospice, Elmwood Senior Care Assisted Living and Cornerstone for their extraordinary care, unwavering support and boundless compassion.
