James R. Thorpe, 89

CAMPBELL… James R. Thorpe, 89 passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at Hospice House in Poland, Ohio.

James was born January 21, 1936 in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of John and Ellen (Dickey) Thorpe.

He was a1954 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and joined the U.S. Army and served from February 18, 1959 until February 6, 1961

James was a lifelong resident of the Youngstown area. He was a member of Marion Heights Church and a member of the Kiawanis Club.

James worked for Youngstown Steel Door as a laborer, building sliding doors for rail road cars and retired in 1981.

He coached little league for many years. He enjoyed baseball and football, especially the Cleveland Browns. James also enjoyed playing the lottery, reading the newspaper and going for rides.

James will be deeply missed and always remembered by his daughters, Donna Thorpe of Campbell and Bonnie (Jim) Leigh of Warren; two great-nephews, Matthew Bennett and Kyle Thorpe both of Campbell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Susan Salsgiver; sisters, Barbara Sabo and Nancy Salsgiver; brothers, John and Donald Thorpe.

The Thorpe family has entrusted James’ care to the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell, Ohio. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, December 17, 2025 from 11am-1pm at the the funeral home followed by a funeral service at 1 pm.
