John Deley, Sr. Obituary

COLUMBUS – John P. Deley, Sr., 85, formerly of Youngstown, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 16, 2024, at Sunrise of Gahanna. He was born April 5, 1939, to the late Peter and Anna Molchan Deley.  He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High school in 1957 and married the love of his life, the former Carole Magda on October 2, 1965.

John served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1969 and was stationed in Korea after the war. After military life, he lived in Youngstown and in 2000 moved to Poland. John delivered mail for 35 years in Poland, Lansingsville, and Boardman, Ohio. Because of his conscientiousness, he was presented the U.S. Postal Service Safe Driving Award for having no accidents after twenty-five years of service. He was also an active member of the local Postal Union.

Our Lady of Sorrows Parish at St. Matthias Church of Youngstown, Ohio, benefited greatly from the services and time John dedicated to his parish.  He enjoyed serving on Parish Council as Vice President, as well as having the responsibilities of Chairman of the Administration and Finance Committee, where he raised money for several improvements for the Church and School Buildings. He was an usher at the weekly masses and could be found cleaning and decorating for the holidays. Holy Name also benefited from his services as Treasurer and honored him as Service Man of the Year in 1995.

John enjoyed spending time with his family and enjoyed many hours laboring in his vegetable garden and flower beds. But, when he was not raising money or vegetables, he was cheering on the Cleveland Browns, the Guardians as well as The Ohio State Buckeyes.

He loved his family dearly and was always there for them. He was also a father figure to his children’s friends. He was a great man and will be missed.

John is survived by his daughter Lisa Deley of Columbus; his son John (Kathy) Deley of Lexington, KY; grandchildren Allegra (Chase) Arehart and Mason Deley, all of Lexington, KY; sister Margie Belcik of Youngstown; brother-in-law Raymond (Leonard) Magda of Atlanta, GA; sister-in-law Linda (Robert) Davenport of Struthers; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Carole, who passed away on May 1, 2018, brothers Frank (Mary) Deley and Peter (Helen) Deley, and brother-in-law Michael Belcik.

Visitation will be held at Kubina-Yuhasz-Wasko Funeral Home in Youngstown on Wednesday, August 21 from 5 to 7 pm. An hour of calling will also be held from 10:00 am to 10:50 am on Thursday, August 22 at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish at St. Matthias Church, followed immediately by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am with Fr.
