Matthew Ankeles Obituary

Matthew Arnold Ankeles, 89

Campbell…Matthew Arnold Ankeles, 89, passed away in the early morning hours of February 10, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones at Mercy – St. Elizabeth’s Boardman Hospital.

Born in Lynn, Massachusetts on October 6, 1934, Matt was drawn to the Midwest after meeting the love of his life, Nancy (Olenick), his wife of 57 years. The couple married on September 9, 1967, and made their home and raised their family in Campbell, Ohio.

He was employed by the Mahoning County Engineers for 39 years, retiring in 2010 as a supervisor.

Matt proudly served our country as a member of the United States Air Force, enlisting as a very young man and serving during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in October of 1959 after serving eight years and returned to Massachusetts.

He spoke often of growing up in New England and his love of the ocean and was a certified scuba diver. As a member of the New England Divers Club, he relished exploring undersea history and was regularly called upon to assist in search-and-rescue efforts on the water.

Matthew was a lifelong animal owner and lover, evidenced in his great affection for his own dogs—from Monty, his cocker spaniel and companion as a child, to Muffin and Chinook, his family dogs, to Blue, the hound he cared for at work—all held a special place in his heart. He was always sure to ask for an update on his grand-dogs right after checking in on the rest of the family.

Left with broken hearts but to cherish his love forever are the family members of whom he was so proud, his wife Nancy; their children, Amy (Troy), Paul (Jessi) and Andrea; and his grandchildren, Madison, Jake, Carson, Delaney, and Cooper.

Matt was welcomed by those preceding him in death, his father Edward Ankeles, mother Sadye (Waxman) Ankeles, sister Barbara White, and beloved son-in-law Daniel Gross.

A private funeral mass was held at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, officiated by Rev. Michael Swierz. Matt will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery in Poland. The family appreciates your prayers and suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers.
