Nicholas “Nick” Ihnat, 87

GIRARD…Nicholas ‘Nick’ Ihnat, 87, passed away peacefully Saturday June 22, 2024, surrounded by his family at Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Belmont Avenue. He was born the son of Andrew and Mary Ihnat on December 17, 1936, in Campbell, OH. He started working at a young age at Trumbell Bakery and graduated in the class of 1954 from Campbell Memorial High School. He met his future wife Agnes while still in high school in the summer of 1953 and married June 14, 1958. They had three children. Nick continued to work at a bakery employed by Schwebel’s in Youngstown. To spend more time with his family Nick took an opportunity with Jergens, Inc in the greater Cleveland area and relocated his family in 1972. Nick retired from Jergens, Inc. after 34 years in 2000 from the sales, purchasing and shipping departments. After he retired, he continued to work part-time for American Limousine Service as a funeral home driver.

Nick and his family were members of St. Stephen’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Euclid. He was an active member for the Church’s Civics Club, held multiple board positions and was an usher with the church. Additionally, Nick was a member of the Knights of Columbus; Euclid Counsel #3164 holding the position of Grand Knight Third-Degree and the 800 Moses Cleveland Assembly holding the position as a Past Faithful Navigator, Fourth-Degree Knight.

Nick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His passion for baking Paska and Kolache was passed to his children and grandchildren to carry on the tradition. Additional hobbies included repairing and restoring old cars with his son, traveling with his wife and taking her to casinos, and visiting and enjoying time with family.

Nick leaves his wife Agnes Ihnat (Yuhas) of 66 years, his daughters Agnes Root (Gregory Mellott), Harrisonville, PA, JoAnn Bohonik (Michael), West Middlesex, PA, and son Nicholas Ihnat (Marie DeCapua), Twinsburg, OH. Granddaughter Caitlyn Ihnat-Dyko (Chris), Asheville, NC, and grandson Jude Ihnat, Cuyahoga Falls, OH, great-grandson Logan Avery, West Middlesex, and great-granddaughter Isabella Agnes, West Middlesex. Nick leaves sisters-in-law Adele and Mary Ann Ihnat, and Itha Risen, many nieces and nephews, along with great nieces and nephews.

Nick is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Joseph and his wife Josephine, Edward, John and Andrew, as well as two infant sisters.

The family would like to thank the Liberty Township Police, Fire and Ambulance Departments for their services. The Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Hospital Emergency Room and ICU departments for their care and compassion through our difficult time. A special thank you to Dr. Hoffman, Dr. Collins and Dr. Taneja for their expertise and support.

The Ihnat family has entrusted Nick’s care to the Wasko funeral Home in Campbell. Calling Hours will be held on Monday July 1, 2024 from 11-11:45am at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Campbell. A Funeral Divine Liturgy will follow at 12 Noon in the church with the Rev. Kevin E. Marks, officiating.

Nick will be laid to rest at St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Cemetery.
