Paul Robert (Bob) Jonda, 90
Campbell…Paul Robert (Bob) Jonda passed away peacefully on June 1, 2024 at home with his loving family by his side. He was born on June 9, 1933, in Struthers, Ohio and was raised by his paternal grandparents George & Katherine Jonda following the death of his mother Elizabeth Dupal Jonda when he was 3 years old.
Paul (Bob) Jonda joined the Navy at the age of 18 during the Korean War. He was a third class petty officer in the 7th division as an ordinance gunner on the USS Toledo and USS Los Angeles. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, The Good Conduct Medal and the Korean Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1956.
Upon returning to Ohio, he met Mildred Turchan through mutual friends and they were married on July 6, 1957, in St Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Youngstown. They built their home in Campbell where they lived for 64 years. Bob worked at Youngstown Steel Door from 1956-1996 as a crane and compressor operator. He also worked at Youngstown Tool and Die and International Dies as a template maker. At one point, he worked all three jobs at the same time. Upon retirement, Bob became a starter at Deer Creek golf course in Hubbard, where he had a hole in one on the 15th hole.
Family meant everything to Bob. He never missed a sporting event, graduation, or other milestone in his family’s lives. Bob always said faith and family were the two most important ideals in life. He was a lifelong member of Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church, it’s Byzantine Social Club and Altar & Rosary Society. Bob was also a member of the Campbell golf league.
Bob’s house and yard were always impeccable. He was a master of all trades from mechanics, roofing, painting and laying ceramic tiles—there was not a job he could not do.
Bob is survived by his wife of 66 years Mildred, his son Mark (Annamarie) Jonda of Boardman, daughter Paula (Greg) Slemons of Canfield, and son-in-law Dr Stephen Salcedo of Sarasota Florida. He leaves six grandchildren Bryant Salcedo of Austin Texas, Robert (Maureen) Salcedo of Columbus, Bri (Joe) Winiecki of Columbus, Elena Slemons of Canfield, Britney Jonda (Joe Craycraft) of Boardman, and Bob Jonda of Pittsburgh as well as two great grandchildren Grace Salcedo of Austin Texas and Vincent (Vinny) Salcedo of Columbus. Bob also leaves sister-in-law Marge (Michael) Secora of The Villages and sister Rita of Nevada. He is proceeded in death by his beloved daughter Janice Salcedo, sisters-in-law & brothers-in-law Alyce & Ed Walkosak, Elizabeth & Stephen Vargo, nieces Paulette Kloes and Melissa Riddick, great nephew Matt Kloes and great niece Natalie Butcher.
Calling hours will be Thursday, June 6, 2024 from 10-10:45 at Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church in Boardman. A Divine Liturgy will follow in the church at 11am with Fr. Michael Farynets officiating.
Bob will be laid to rest at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville, with full military honors by the Ellsworth VFW Post 9571.
In lieu of flowers, monetary donations can be made to the Infant Jesus of Prague maintenance fund.
